Spanish in Peru

About the Country

Peru is a country that offers unexpected discoveries of wild nature and remains of ancient civilizations. Its diverse landscape changes in every region, from the pacific coast to the high mountain tops of the Andes and the wild nature of the Amazon jungle. Most visitors are drawn by the mystique of the Inca trail, a unique passage through the sacred valley with picturesque villages and the archeological remains of the Inca Empire, leading to Machu Picchu, the most famous site. The Inca civilization is lost, but not completely forgotten: some of its traces can be found in contemporary Peruvian culture, enriching the Spanish tradition that manifests itself in the language, the colonial architecture, the diverse gastronomy with European and local flavours and the music.

Cusco

Situated in the heart of the Peruvian Andes at 3,400m above sea level, Cusco is one of the most important cities in Peru.  Cuzco, or the navel of the world, as it is known by the Incas is the capital of the Inca empire and is filled with unmissable archaeological sites both in and nearby to the city.  In the city centre you will find Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral along with the impressive San Francisco Church and Coricancha. And on the outskirts of the city in Sacsayhuaman you can visit a magnificent Inca Fortress which was added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1983.
The ruins of the Sacred Valley are architectural wonders not to be missed.  The most important and popular of these is Machu Picchu ,a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but just as interesting are the towns of Ollantaytambo, Pisac and Chunchero. Doing an Inca trail trek is one of the best ways to enjoy the stunning Andean landscapes.

Lima has managed to hold onto its traditions from Pre Inca and Inca times and has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. Step back in time and wander the streets and squares of the historic centre of Lima and marvel at the colonial architecture. But on the flip side it is also a bustling and modern city in which you can find an endless amount of things to do such as hang gliding over the seaside cliffs of Miraflores or surfing the beautiful beaches of Lima.
